Being a Girl Is Too Much Work

Stupid, fiddly, time wasting work.

Here's my big confession - I have NO IDEA about beauty. None. Hair do's, make up, manis, pedis.... it's all just mumbo jumbo to me.

I WANT to know. But not really having friends as I went through high school and beyond, having babies and being poor have all taken their toll.

I can see the finest of wrinkles ready to appear. I have grey hairs on top of my head. But at the same time I'm still struggling with the most sentsitive, acne prone skin ever.

I need help.

Unfortunately, help mostly seems to come at a ridiculous price... and you can never be sure what will work. It's such a gamble. Years of visits to "skin specialists" have taught me it's more about pushing the new thing than what's actually good for me.

Aside from that I have a few basic beauty tools... I have a hair straightener. All I can manage with it is a dead straight, you-could-cut-metal-with-this-edge look, or the half-ironed-shirt-crinkle. Neither of them very stylish.

I don't have curling tongs, and even if I did I have no idea how to use them either.

What's a pedi?

I first had my eyebrows waxed when I was twenty seven years old.

That tells you how bad this situation is.

Now, I can't afford beauty school, or a team of people to make me gorgeous before I get out of bed.

And I'm becoming aware of how much the waxing, mani, blow wave, can impact on my shoe obsession.

So today I enrolled in the "How Hard Can It Be?" school of home beauty.

Starting with a leg waxing kit.

I'm not sure if WonderMan is running a book yet, but I would give ten to one odds on light maiming within the first week.

At any rate I'm sure it will make for some good laughs at my attempts to become a girl.

How hard can it be?

  1. My mom always said that wrinkles were a sign of character. And that nothing was prettier than a laugh line. So I'm going with that.

  2. Is there a beauty school near you? They should have cheaper prices for any and all of this stuff.
I'm not very girly either. I have a hairdryer and that's all. I have used my mother-in-law's straightener, but I just do straight. hehe

Have fun waxing, I never did it well and didn't enjoy it.

    1. I will have to have a scout around and see if there is one nearby, I'm also fairly close to the city so I can try there as well :)

I'm not looking forward to the waxing bit... but it's getting pretty expensive to go to the salon regularly.

  3. Love this! I didn't know there was a such thing as eyebrow waxing until I was 19. Sometimes I can be bothered with beauty, sometimes not. After 10 years of living in the same suburb I've finally found a beautician I like and who doesn't bug me about being an irregular client. Good luck with the home waxing!

  4. Good luck! Is there a beauty school near where you live? Or even a high school that offers a cosmotology class? If yes, you should contact them as you will get a super reduced rate or even free beauty procedures.

As for your skin...I swear by vitamin E. You can get it at a health food store and it has the same texture as vasaline. It might be a little pricy (I'm not sure how much it costs) but as you only need a little, it lasts forever. I've been using the same container since like 1995 and am now just starting to run out. You can use it for any skin issue- acne, burns, stretch marks, etc.

    1. No school close by, but I'm not as far from the city so I can try there :) I've never tried vitamin E on my face, I will definitely put it on my list of things to try. My new doctor has just prescribed me antibiotic gel, and I'm hoping this will have an effect. The vitamin E would be good to maintain it once I run the treatment course though x

  5. I'm super low maintenance and don't bother most of the time. I hate going to the hairdresser (dye it myself), have never had a mani/pedi but if I'm going out know how to bung on enough make up, fake tan and do my hair so I can fake 'glam' for a night.

There are heaps of tutorials on you-tube. Good luck!

    1. I can manage au natural make up with the help of Garnier BB and some lippy, but that's about as glam as I get. Takes me FOREVER to make my hair look decent!

  6. Go for tutorials on YouTube, especially with things like eyeliner and hair do's.... and moisturize....!!! Try small clips in hair with jewels or little flowers, twist and pin then spray with hairspray (homebrand I use). I don't use curler, hair dryer, straightener or those expensive hair creams. Keep it simple and put on a jangly pair of earrings! And! Experiment!

  7. Ha! I had this very same problem. Life just sort of took over, and I would rather have 10 minutes of sleep rather than make-up. I went to the department store on New Year's Eve afternoon and told them I was really a 12 year-old girl with no make-up experience trapped in a late 30s woman. She showed me exactly what to do...FOR FREE! I bought some of the stuff, but learning the techniques was the best. I didn't wax my eyebrows until I was almost 20, but they really needed it about a decade before that!

    1. Wow! That's lovely that they taught you the techniques :) I will have to try that, as I never had any girlfriends to show me!
